What to Expect During Initial and Subsequent Therapy Sessions:
Please arrive a few minutes early for your first session in order to fill out some basic paperwork (e.g., background information, presenting problem, insurance information [if applicable], rights & responsibilities, etc.).*
Your initial session will begin with a review of the completed paperwork, this is followed by an assessment interview. During the assessment interview, I will gather background information in attempt to more fully understand your experiences and your reason(s) for seeking services at this time. Your initial interview session could last anywhere from 60-90 minutes.
Typically, therapy sessions following the assessment session are scheduled weekly. Each regular therapy session generally lasts 50 minutes. Keep in mind, however, that the frequency and length of your therapy sessions will depend on the nature of your issues, the urgency of your situation, and your own goals. The exact structure of your therapy will always be a matter you and I decide jointly and can be revisited regularly and/or as needed.
Additional information, including your rights regarding the therapy process can be found on the Disclosure Statement: Psychological Services.
*Please print out, complete, and bring the appropriate intake forms (see below) with you to your initial session in order to save time.
The Structure of Assessment Sessions:
The assessment process is designed to help me answer questions about the possible causes of problems, distress, and/or your general psychological/cognitive functioning. It is not meant to be psychotherapy, and will be brief and focused on the questions raised by the person who made this referral (e.g., primary care physician, therapist, etc.).
The assessment process usually has two parts that require your participation; a structured interview, which normally takes between two and four hours, and the administration of psychological testing, which may take from four to six hours. The times vary depending on how much information you have to share with me, and the complexity of the issues being assessed. I will also probably be reviewing your medical and psychological records, with consent from you. I may also ask you for permission to speak to other people who have known you well who may help me to understand you such as friends, family members, co-workers, or your therapist if you have one.
Additional information, including your rights during the assessment process can be found on the Disclosure Statement: Psychological Assessment.
